Personal Floatation Devices, PFDs, are an integral part of a safe journey. A PFD should always be worn when you are out boating or kayaking. Most kayakers will wear a US Coast Guard Class type III PFD in either a vest-style or a pullover style.
The PFD should be designed for paddlers and feature large neck and armholes and narrow shoulder straps. It should allow for good freedom of movement through all paddling motions. Your PFD should have a means to make adjustments to the fit at the waist; shoulder and around the torso to allow for a proper, snug fit. Pockets; lash-tabs and reflective piping are compliments to a good PFD. There is a difference in fit with a women-specific PFD. PFDs come in a variety of colors and styles, so get something you like and you will never feel the urge to go without it.
